Tribal Housing

Patterson Enterprises is proud to be a leading builder for Native American Tribal Entities. Patterson and its affiliates have completed a great variety of housing projects for Native American Communities including the Ak Chin Indian Community, Gila River Indian Community, Tohono O’odham Nation, San Carlos Apache Nation, and the Navajo Nation. Patterson Enterprises and its affiliate companies have completed tribal housing projects of nearly 3,000 units.

Below are summaries of our work with various tribes

Ak-Chin Indian Community

The Ak-Chin Indian Community is nestled into the Santa Cruz Valley of Southern Arizona. The Community lies 35 miles south of Phoenix in the northwestern part of Pinal County. Ak-Chin is an O’odham word translated to mean “mouth of the wash.” The Ak-Chin Indian Community has an enrollment of more than 1,100 tribal members and a land base of just over 22,000 acres. Despite its size and small footprint, the Community makes large contributions to the local economy through its various economic enterprises.

Patterson Enterprises has completed approximately half a dozen housing projects including 45 housing units. The projects included both renovations and full new construction of single family homes and infrastructure.

Navajo Nation

The Navajo Nation is the largest land area retained by a native tribe in the United States and is home to the second largest tribe by population. Its land mass includes parts of Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico and its area has expanded several times throughout its history. Patterson Enterprises and its affiliates have built over 130 homes with related infrastructure in the Navajo nation. Due to its unique geography, the Navajo Nation faces a much colder climate than most Southwestern Native American Tribe.

The nation implemented a project in which we were able to renovate 1,350 homes to include new heating systems. This project not only lifted quality of life for tribal members, but helped the environment by significantly reducing emissions with new, modern systems.

Tohono O’Odham Nation

The lands of the Tohono O’odham Nation are located within the Sonoran Desert in south central Arizona. Uniquely, the Nation is composed of four separate bases of land. Of the four lands bases, the largest contains more than 2.7 million acres beginning south of Casa Grande and encompassing parts of Pinal, Pima and Maricopa Counties before continuing south into Mexico. San Xavier is the second largest, and contains 71,095 acres just south of Tucson. Smaller parcels include San Lucy District located near Gila Bend, and Florence Village, which is located near the city of Florence. The landscape is consistently compelling: a wide desert valley, interspersed with plains and marked by mountains that rise abruptly to nearly 8,000 feet.

Patterson Enterprises and its affiliates have completed projects for the Tohono O’odham Ki:Ki Association (TOKA) and the Tohono O’odham Utility Authority (TOUA) as a General Contractor and a subcontractor. These projects include site construction of subdivision lots and infrastructure, renovations, and new construction of single family homes. These 8 projects have included over 120 units.

Gila River Indian Community

The Gila River Indian Community has a population of just over 11,000 is composed of approximately 373,599 acres located immediately adjacent to Phoenix. Its proximity to the city provides a number of economic benefits. The Gila River Indian Community was the home of the famed World War II hero, Ira Hayes.

Patterson Enterprises and its affiliates have completed a significant number of housing projects for the tribe and its various entities totaling nearly 1,000 units. These projects included a small number where Patterson performed subcontracting work or demolition services. However, the vast majority were new construction of single family homes, often including site infrastructure and subdivision infrastructure. The majority of these homes were built in a very short space of time and some were negotiated to include a stipulation that the houses must be completely built and turned over before any payment would be received. These projects allowed Patterson to grow significantly while proving its capability to complete projects in an expeditious manner.

San Carlos Apache Nation

The San Carlos Apache Nation spans Gila, Graham, and Pinal Counties in southeastern Arizona, roaming over a landscape that ranges from alpine meadows to desert. Encompassing 1,834,781 acres, the San Carlos Apache Nation was established in1871. The Tribe has acted as a careful steward over the land, making it home to a number of beautiful natural attractions. Over one-third of the community’s land is forested or wooded. Forest lands, with their jumbled topography, create a naturally superior habitat for many wildlife species causing elk, mule deer, bighorn sheep, javelina, antelope, migratory birds, turkeys, black bear and mountain lion to be at home there. A portion of the reservation is contiguous with the largest stand of ponderosa pines in the world. The San Carlos Lake, a fisherman’s paradise is the largest body of water in Arizona.

Patterson Enterprises is proud to have partnered with the Tribe on a number of new construction and rehabilitation projects, including multifamily housing projects, single family homes, both scattered and with full subdivision infrastructure. We have hosted a number of training programs through the Tribal Employment Rights Office and partnered with local businesses leading to significant economic growth reported in the community’s newspaper. Over the years, we have completed nearly 250 housing units with the Tribe.
